Once a flea becomes an adult, its one goal in life is to reproduce. Females can lay more than 5000 eggs over their lifetime leading to high levels of infestation. An adult flea can jump 50 times its own body length but only one or two feet off the ground, presenting the usual bites on lower parts of the leg. They can be active all year round especially during late autumn and winter where the use of heating within a home triggers dormant eggs to hatch.
What are the signs that fleas are present?
If you have found fleas on your pet or yourself then you will also have eggs, larva and pupa, alongside fully grown adults. Pets can be seen scratching more than usual. You may find their droppings which look like specks of dirt easily seen with light coloured fur. Individuals can also be seen around human ankles or across material surfaces.
What should I do?
Prevention against fleas is relatively straightforward. Use Vet approved flea treatments when necessary, regularly washing all pet materials over 60degrees and ensure good house keep (Hoovering, Regular bed sheet changes and cleaning skirting boards).
However once fleas are in your home it can be almost impossible to break the life cycle with out professional treatments.
