Ants

There are three main ant species that we address on a regular basis. The Yellow-meadow ant (Lasius flavus), the red ant (Myrmica rubra) and the common garden ant (Lasius niger). Out of the three species it is the common garden ant that is statistically relevant.

What are ants?

One of the most successful species, Ants are eusocial insects of the family Formicidae and have long been a fascination for scientists. Each nest consists of a queen, worker ants and at a certain time of the year, alates (Winged individuals). Using pheromones, sounds, and touch, signals are sent to the rest of the colony regarding food source, leaving a trail or road map for others to follow. These signals are also used in defense and to guard farming practices.

What are the signs that ants are present?

You will know if you have ants in your home because you’ll see them. Scouts from a nest internal or external send individuals out to look for new food sources to help build and maintain the colony. Noticing these individuals is key to stopping internal infestations before they develop. Once a source is located, ants use chemical signals to instruct others to  return to the same spot until the source is depleted, only for the process of scouting to restart pushing an infestation further into the home once they have established that it is a good source for food and water.

What can I do?

Prevention is possible by keeping all including kitchen surfaces clean and not leaving food or fruit out on worktops. Sugary substances and left over food can encourage ants, overall housekeeping is key. If you do find individuals of high numbers, its time to call an expert who can irradicate the problem and prevent further infestation.
