Beetle Infestation Services

Dating from the scarabs of the ancient Egyptians, beetles have been prominent in history and are the most widely eaten insects in the world, with about 344 species used as food, usually at the larval stage

What are beetles?

Beetles are a group of insects that form the order Coleoptera, in the superorder Endopterygota. The fur beetle, Attagenus pellio, carpet beetle Antrenus verbasci and leather beetles Dermestes maculatus, are pests, the larvae of which cause damage to animal materials found in homes and businesses including leather furniture, wool rugs and carpets, fur and even leather book bindings.

Different materials attract specific types of beetles into homes: dry pet food can attract carpet beetles and mummified rats and mice in cavity walls and lint, hair and fur can provide food and shelter for leather and fur beetles. Many species seek out stored grains and packaged foods, while others feed on garden plants, wood, or fabric.

You may also accidentally bring beetles into your home in firewood, potted plants or packages and they will happily overwinter in your home to avoid cold weather.

What are the signs that beetles are present?

With carpet, leather and fur beetles, you are likely to see not only the damage caused but also the beetles, larvae and eggs in corners and hidden places like windowsills, under the carpet, edges of upholstered furniture as well as faecal pellets and shed skin on clothes, carpets, and upholstered furniture. Both adults and larvae prefer to feed in dark, undisturbed areas. As a result, identification of an infestation can be difficult to identify. Because an infestation can go unnoticed until it is widespread, treatment is best left to pest control professionals.

What can I do?

With any variety of destructive beetle and their larva, infestation can happen quickly and be devastating to your home and belongings. Whilst you can try to prevent them infesting your home by vacuuming, cleaning up cluttered areas and laundering fabrics, it’s best to eliminate the problem completely by calling in the professionals and once an infestation has taken hold, it can be difficult to get rid of. Hillbans Pest Control can both control the problem in the long term and solve the immediate situation.
