Rock Pigeon (Columb Livia)

Columb Livia (rock pigeon) is one of the most iconic avian species in the U.K. they are seen across the British isles from gardens to towns. Although a well loved bird, the feral pigeon is perceived as a pest species.

Why perceived as a pest?

Pigeons will utilise all areas when nesting, new buildings and windowsills. As a result, the species is the most commonly controlled. This is due to the spread of disease throughout their populations within a given area. They also promote the spread of zoonotic disease across species.  For example, Encephalitis, Histoplasmosis, Salmonellosis, E. coli.

Protection and Law

Avian species are protected under Wildlife countryside act 1981 and are readily encouraged to urban areas. feeding individual flocks has seen an increase in numbers, leading to increasing human animal conflict. Due to health and safety, pigeons have become a problematic species for various industries and civilian areas.
