October Blog Post: Keep Your Home & Garden Pest-Free This Autumn

As the temperature starts to drop and the evenings draw in, pests begin searching for somewhere warm and dry to spend the colder months and that often means your home or garden! Autunm is the perfect time to take a few simple steps to keep unwanted visitors at bay.

🔍 Check Lofts & Basements

Pests such as rodents and insects are drawn to quiet and undisturbed spaces. We recommend inspecting your loft, garage and basement for any signs of droppings, gnaw marks or nesting materials. Early detection can save a lot of time and stress later on.

🛠️ Seal Gaps & Small Holes

You’d be surprised how small a gap mice and rats can squeeze through. Check around doors, windows, vents and pipes for any tiny openings.

  • Seal Gaps: Even the tiniest gap can be open for pests. Check for cracks, gaps under doors, or holes near pipes and vents. Use sealant or mesh to block potential entry points and stop pests before they can move in.
  • Inspect Your Loft: Regularly inspect attics and lofts for signs of pests such as cluster flies, which seek out warm places to hibernate.
  • Clean Gutters: Ensure gutters and drains are clean to prevent areas that attract pests such as woodlice and silverfish.

🍎 Remove Food & Water Sources

Food and water are two of the biggest pest magnets remove those and you’ll make your home and garden much less appealing.

  • Secure Bins: Keep outdoor bins securely closed to prevent rodents and other pests from accessing food.
  • Clean Up: Clean up fallen fruit from your garden and clear any food waste or spills promptly to avoid attracting pests.
  • Store Food Properly: Store food, including pet food in airtight containers. Keep kitchens clean and free of food debris.

🌿 Don’t forget the Garden!

Your garden can be pest hotspot during autumn, fallen leaves, compost heaps and log piles provide excellent shelter for rodents.

  • Keep outdoor areas tidy and free from clutter.
  • Store firewood away from your house and off the ground.
  • Regularly turn compost heaps to discourage nesting.

By maintaining your garden, you’re creating an environment that’s less appealing to pests seeking warmth and cover.
