Is Your Home Summer-Ready? Pest-Proofing Tips for Warmer Weather

As summer approaches, most of us look forward to enjoying longer days, outdoor activities, and spending more time in our gardens. However, with the sunshine also comes an increase in pest activity – and without the right precautions, unwanted visitors could make themselves at home in your property or business.

From rodents and ants to cockroaches and wasps, these pests are far more active in the warmer months, seeking food, water, and shelter. Homes and businesses that are not properly protected can quickly become a target.

At Hillbans Pest Control, we understand that prevention is far easier and more cost-effective than dealing with a full-blown infestation. With a few simple steps, you can pest-proof your property and enjoy a safe, and pest-free summer.

In this guide, we’ll share our expert tips on how to prepare your home for the season ahead and highlight the most common pest risks to be aware of.

1. Inspect & Seal Entry Points in your home or Business

Small gaps around doors, windows, vents and pipes may seem harmless however to pests such as rats, mice and ants is an open invitation!

  • We recommend carefully looking for cracks, gaps or any broken seals to seal the entry points.
  • Common spots include air vents, pipes, door frames and broken seals.
  • Seal these gaps and use bristle strips to the bottom of doors to stop rodents from entering.

Top Tip!

Mice can squeeze through a gap as small as 6mm (the same width as a pencil) so don’t ignore the tiny holes!

2. Maintain a Clean Kitchen

Kitchens within your home or business is a hotspot for pests, providing everything they need to survive for food and warmth.

  • Store dry foods such as cereal, sugar and pet food in airtight containers.
  • Clear away crumbs, dirty dishes and standing water from sinks every day.
  • Sweep and mop regularly especially under appliances where food debris can build up.
  • Make sure rubbish bins have tight-fitting lids and are emptied regularly especially in warm weather.

Why Do This?

Pests such as cockroaches and ants are highly attracted to small food residue and can quickly expand in hidden spaces such as under fridges, ovens and behind cabinets.

3. Eliminate Food & Water Sources

Eliminating food and water sources within your garden can reduce pest activity. Standing water is a magnet for mosquitoes but also cockroaches and rodents seeking drinking water.

  • Refrain from having bird feeders or water ponds for wildlife to reduce risk of unwanted pests.
  • Keep gutters and drains clean to prevent water buildup.
  • Ensure water butts are fitted with tight pest-proof lids.

Top Tip!

If you are reluctant to stop feeding birds and other wildlife our top tip would be to ensure bird feeders are kept clean with no food residue which is an easy yet effective means to limit free food to rats.
