Celebrating World Pest Day (June 6th 2025)

World pest day is observed every June 6 to honour the vital work of pest control professionals and raise awareness of how pests can affect peoples lives. The event was initiated by the Chinese pest control association together with the US National Pest Management Association and the confederation of European Pest Management Associations. Each year, World Pest Day strives to increase public, government and media awareness of the essential role pest management organisations play in safeguarding public health.

History of World Pest Day

Pest control was first recorded in 3000 B.C in ancient Egypt, the Egyptians applied biological control agents by introducing cats to manage rodent populations in their grain stores. While there was a continued development in pest management during medieval times in other parts of the world, Europe regressed and adopted superstitious tactics. However, that changed with the scientific awakening during the Renaissance, new chemical repellents were discovered including nicotine and arsenic.

During the 1960’s, the public became aware of the harmful impacts of chemical pesticides on the environment. That led to the re-emergence of biological control. Although chemical pest control is still the primary method for pest management today, people are beginning to take an interest in natural pest control.

The first World Pest Day was launched on 6 June 2017 in Beijing by the Chinese Pest Control Association. It was co-sponsored from the outset by three major international bodies:

  • The Federation of Asian and Oceania Pest Managers Association,
  • The national Pest Management Association
  • The confederation of European Pest Management Associations.

Purpose?

Its core aim is to raise public, government and media awareness of the vital role professional pest management plays in safeguarding human health, protecting food supplies and preserving property.

Since 2017, World Pest Day events have taken place across Asia, Europe, North America and beyond featuring workshops, public demonstrations, new technologies and media campaigns that stress prevention as much as treatment.

Fun Facts About Pests!

Bed Bug Misconception

This common pest was once associated with unhygienic surroundings, but bed bugs can set up home in any property. However, if you clean and vacuum your home more frequently, you have a higher chance of spotting and eradicating an infestation before it is out of control.

Cockroaches are Speedy!

Cockroaches are incredibly fast! They can run 1.5 meters per second, which is the equivalent of a human running at around 200 miles per hour.

Rats have incredible hearing

Rats can detect noises up to around 90,000Hz – that’s four times greater than our own hearing and twice as high as a dog’s.

Fleas can jump extremely high

If humans could jump as well as fleas, we’d be able to leap over The Shard in London or the Chrysler Building in NYC.

Ants Rule the World

There are more than 10 quadrillion individual ants alive at any moment—roughly 1.4 million ants for every human on Earth.
